About Marvin, North Carolina

Marvin is a village of 6,358 people in Union County, near Charlotte and right on the South Carolina line. Long before European settlers came, Waxhaw people lived here near the border of the two Carolinas. Their name came from a waxy reed that grew by the swamps in the Waxhaw forests.

In 1700 John Lawson, who served as North Carolina's colonial surveyor-general, became the first European to meet the Waxhaw. A smallpox epidemic struck in 1741, killing many of the Waxhaw and driving others away, and settlers began farming the land. German, English, Welsh and Scottish families made homes here, and the village says cotton farming came to define their simple way of life. Marvin was chartered as a village on July 1, 1994.

“the land was being so fertile that no labor of man in one or two ages could make it poor.”

  • Union County since 1842Marvin's land was part of Anson County until 1842. That year a split between Anson and Mecklenburg counties produced Union County, which has held Marvin ever since.
  • Grants for Revolutionary serviceIn 1777 North Carolina began rewarding men who served in the Revolution with land grants, and around 640 acres went out this way. Francis Carter, one of the area's first settlers, is believed to have lived along what is now Crane Road and handled the grants.
  • Near Andrew Jackson's birthplaceMost early families came south along the Great Trading Path. Among them were the Polks, family of President James K. Polk, and the Jacksons. President Andrew Jackson was born near Marvin.
  • Cotton on Old Steel Creek RoadMost settlers here owned slaves, many of them bought in Charleston, and cotton picked by enslaved people traveled out on Old Steel Creek Road. Slavery in Marvin lasted until the end of the Civil War. The old road's route is now Highway 521.
