About Pineville, North Carolina

Pineville is a town of 10,602 people at the southern tip of Mecklenburg County, along the South Carolina line. Before it was a town, the place was called Morrow's Turnout, because its wide meadows gave traders room to turn their animals out to graze. It grew into a center for trading mules and a stop for stagecoaches, and later for trains on the Charlotte & Columbia Railroad.

Around 1852 the settlement took the name Pineville for the big stands of pine that grew nearby, and it was incorporated in 1873. From the 1930s through the 1980s, fewer than 2,000 people lived here. Then the first stretch of I-485 opened, a short link meant to carry traffic around Charlotte, and it happened to cross Pineville. The open land beside its two interchanges filled with stores, and by 2020 the town had passed 10,000 people.

“Colonial trading route, dating from the seventeenth century, from Petersburg, Virginia, to the Catawba Indians in Carolina, passed here.”

Visitors also find a main house, a cookhouse and a barn built of logs, along with a museum and a short film about his life.
