About Mascotte, Florida
Mascotte is a city of 6,609 people in Lake County, Florida. It was incorporated in 1925, and the census of 1930 found just 260 residents. The town grew slowly for decades, reached 5,101 people by 2010, and kept climbing to its 2020 count.
The city took its name from the SS Mascotte, a steamship that belonged to Henry B. Plant, the Tampa civic booster. That ship now sails across the Mascotte city seal, and Tampa's seal carries it as well. An Orlando Sentinel account tells the naming differently and credits J. W. Payne of Boston, who had a second ship of the same name in mind, one that sailed from Baltimore to St. Petersburg.
- Built in Philadelphia in 1886Plant's ship was built in Philadelphia in 1886. His wife, Margaret, named it for Edmond Audran's comic opera La mascotte, hoping the good fortune in the opera's story would follow the vessel. It carried passengers on the run linking Tampa, Key West and Havana until 1924, when it was sold to new owners in the North.
- Tobacco runs to HavanaIn 1896 Spain placed an embargo on tobacco from Cuba. Before the ban took hold, the Mascotte and the Olivette, a sister ship, raced to Havana and returned loaded to the top, which let Tampa's cigar factories keep working. In 1898 the Mascotte brought wounded soldiers home from the Spanish-American War, made two more tobacco trips that September, and was said to have carried around 900 Cuban refugees to Tampa.
- A centennial festival in 2025Mascotte closed its centennial year on Saturday, November 8, 2025. The hometown celebration took place at 219 West Myers Boulevard, and Mayor Steven Sheffield opened the day. Local vendors sold food, Gatorland brought a reptile exhibit, bands played music, and American Legion Post #239 ran a bingo game.
