About Mattapoisett, Massachusetts
Mattapoisett is a town of 6,508 people in Plymouth County, on Buzzards Bay. In Wampanoag its name means "a place of resting," and signs of Wampanoag villages and burial grounds turn up all across town. In 1664 Governor William Brenton bought the land from Metacomet, the Wampanoag leader also called King Philip, and it passed to his son Ebenezer, who sold it. Settlers arrived in 1750, while the area still belonged to Rochester, and Mattapoisett became a town of its own in 1857.
Farming and logging came first, but ships made the town's name. From 1740 into the 1870s its yards launched some 400 vessels, and during the early nineteenth century many whalers working out of East Coast ports came from here. The last one, the Wanderer, was built in 1878, shortly after oil was discovered in Pennsylvania and American commercial whaling began to collapse. As the shipyards went quiet, wealthy families from New York and Boston started spending their summers here, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. among them.
- Melville's ship, the AcushnetThe whaler Acushnet came out of Mattapoisett's shipyards. Herman Melville, who went on to write Moby-Dick, signed on as a crewman and eventually deserted her.
- Ned Point Light, 1837The lighthouse at Ned Point takes its name from Ned Dexter, a local farmer. Builders put it up in 1837, mostly with stone collected from the nearby beaches, and its 32 granite steps are fitted into the wall with no mortar at all. It joined the National Register in 1987.
- The Herring RunThe Mattapoisett River flows 11.6 miles from Snipatuit Pond in Rochester to Mattapoisett Harbor. It has long carried the biggest herring runs on the bay, which is why older residents still call it the Herring Run. Every Memorial Day since 1934, boaters have raced down it from Rochester to Mattapoisett.
- A farm saved from house lotsNear the Fairhaven line, land once meant for house lots became the Nasketucket Bay State Reservation, which locals know as Nunes Farm. Its 210 acres hold rocky shoreline, open fields and trails through the woods.
