About Marion, Massachusetts

Marion is a town of 5,347 people in Plymouth County, on Buzzards Bay. Europeans settled here in 1679, when the place was called Sippican and belonged to Rochester as one of its districts. Sippican was the Wampanoag name for the people who lived here, and it still names the harbor that nearly splits the town in two and the river in its north.

The village was home to many sea captains and sailors, and a few small shipyards worked along the harbor. In the late 1840s Mattapoisett tried to redraw the boundaries and swallow up Sippican Village, so its people organized a committee and sent it to Boston to ask for a town of their own. With help from a powerful local ally, they won incorporation on May 14, 1852, and the new town took the name of Francis Marion, a hero of the Revolutionary War. Mattapoisett became a town in 1857.

  • Tabor Academy, 1876Elizabeth Sprague Taber, a wealthy widow and generous friend of the town, used her will to turn a building in the Lower Village into a school for local children. Tabor Academy opened in 1876 and taught boys and girls together from the start, as she had wished. Its spot on Sippican Harbor earned it the nickname "The School by the Sea," and it still sails the 115-foot SSV Tabor Boy.
  • Bird Island Light, 1819The masonry lighthouse on Bird Island went up in 1819. The island covers 3 acres and sits roughly half a mile south of Butler Point. The 1938 hurricane wiped out every other building on the island but left the tower standing. Marion bought the island in 1966, and the light shone again on July 4, 1997. Roseate terns nest there, so the island closes to visitors from May through August.
  • A summer harborAfter 1852 Marion made its living from Buzzards Bay, through fishing and summer visitors. Grover Cleveland and Frances Folsom Cleveland spent summers here. So did Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Sailing fills the season, and the town's fleet, one of the largest in Massachusetts, crowds the inner harbor with masts.
  • Undersea technology since 1940A company founded in 1940 as Francis Associates built technology for undersea warfare in Marion, including drones, torpedoes and antennae. In 1981 it became a public company under the name Sippican Ocean Systems, Inc. Lockheed Martin bought it in 2004, and it stayed in town as Lockheed Martin Sippican until 2022.
  • Alone for Goldwater in 1964Marion was long a Republican stronghold. In 1964 it backed Barry Goldwater for president, the only town in Plymouth County to do so, while Lyndon B. Johnson carried Massachusetts by a landslide.
