About Pocasset, Massachusetts

Pocasset is a village of 2,843 people in the town of Bourne, in Barnstable County, at the northern end of Buzzards Bay. It takes its name from the Pocasset Wampanoag. The 1890 county history gives the old Native name as Poughkeeste, later Pokesit, a form that slowly changed into the Pocasset used today. The village was once the 2d Precinct of Sandwich.

Its oldest industry grew up on Barlow's River, where Hercules Weston built a blast furnace in 1822. The works later ran as the Pocasset Iron Company, which rebuilt the furnaces to make stoves, kettles and other hollow ware. The furnace on Barlow's River cast the first fancy top and bottom made for an air-tight stove.

  • Stove patterns by Charles H. NyeEvery stove cast at the Pocasset works began with a pattern. Charles H. Nye made those patterns while he spent seventeen years as foreman of the iron works on Barlow's River.
  • Wing's Neck Light, 1849The lighthouse on Wing's Neck went up in 1849 in the Cape Cod style. Its white, wooden, six-sided tower and lantern room sit on top of the stone house where the keeper lived. It is listed on the National Register.
  • More water than landPocasset covers 9.8 square miles, but only 3.7 of them are land. The other 6.1 square miles, about 62.42 percent, are water, from Buzzards Bay on the west to Red Brook Harbor on the south.
