About Monument Beach, Massachusetts
Monument Beach is a village of 2,784 people near the center of the town of Bourne, in Barnstable County. It sits on the shore of Buzzards Bay, with the village of Bourne to the north and Pocasset to the south, and Route 28 runs along its eastern side.
By 1890 Monument Beach had become a summer resort on the Woods Holl branch of the railroad, between Buzzards Bay and Wenaumet station. A county history written that year found it gaining in size and importance more quickly than any other village in the town. From its shore, people looked out across Back River harbor toward Tobey's Island.
“There are many retired shipmasters here, enjoying the fruits of their perilous labors”
- Postmaster from 1878Perez H. Phinney was made the village's postmaster in 1878. He held a second job at the same time as the station agent for the railroad, so the mail and the trains that brought summer visitors both passed through his hands.
- A new store in 1889As the resort grew, David H. Baker put up a convenient building and opened a store in it in the spring of 1889, giving the village a place of its own to buy supplies.
- The beach on Phinneys HarborThe village shares its name with a town beach on Phinneys Harbor. The town of Bourne runs it, with lifeguards and restrooms, and it sits next to the Monument Beach Marina. Windsurfers use it too.
