About Sagamore, Massachusetts

Sagamore is a village of 3,851 people in the town of Bourne, in Barnstable County. Its northern half lines the shore of Cape Cod Bay at Sagamore Beach, and the Cape Cod Canal cuts across its southern end. The name comes from a word that Native peoples of the Northeast used for a leader chosen by election.

For generations the village grew around one employer, the Keith Car Works, which turned out railroad freight cars. By 1916 the works had operated in Sagamore for nearly fifty years, and some flatterers called their head, Eben S. S. Keith, the Kingpin of the Cape. By 1920 it was still the only large factory anywhere on Cape Cod.

  • The Keith Car WorksIn 1920 the geographer Albert Perry Brigham found the whole village built up around the car works. Employees lived in nearly every house in Sagamore, others traveled in each morning from the farms and towns around it, and long lines of freshly built, empty freight cars waited on the siding that led toward Sandwich.
  • Italian and Finnish workersThe plant drew newcomers from across the upper Cape. A small Italian colony in Sandwich sent most of its men to the Sagamore shops. Finnish families west of Barnstable village, who farmed, gardened and dug clams, also took factory jobs here because the pay was better. They made the trip on bicycles, in jitneys and by rail.
  • Summer congresses at the beachBy 1916 Sagamore Beach was home to a Christian Endeavor colony. Each summer it hosted Sociological Congresses, where speakers with national reputations came to give talks on the ideas of the day.
  • The Sagamore BridgeThe Sagamore Bridge carries U.S. Route 6 over the Cape Cod Canal and into the village, making Sagamore one of the main gateways onto Cape Cod.
