About Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts
Buzzards Bay is a village of 4,279 people in the town of Bourne, Barnstable County, on the mainland bank of the Cape Cod Canal. The land was Wampanoag territory before Europeans settled here in 1621. The village grew up on the home and farm of the Bourne family, and for years it went by the name Cohasset Narrows.
The village now carries the name of the bay at its edge, which is said to come from the English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold. As he sailed in, he watched flocks of birds wheeling overhead and took them for buzzards, though they were most likely turkey vultures or ospreys.
- Bourne's civic center since 1914When Bourne became a new town, its first town meeting gathered at Franklin Hall in Buzzards Bay on April 12, 1884. The town waited until 1914 for a separate building, when the Bourne Town Hall went up in Buzzards Bay, and the center of town government moved here from Bourne Village.
- A Summer White HousePresident Grover Cleveland kept a summer home at Agawam Point in Buzzards Bay, which became known as his Summer White House. The house remained a local landmark until it burned on December 10, 1973.
- Massachusetts Maritime AcademyThe Massachusetts Maritime Academy is in Buzzards Bay. So is the National Marine Life Center, an animal hospital that cares for stranded sea turtles and seals so they can be returned to the wild.
