About East Sandwich, Massachusetts

East Sandwich is a village of 3,669 people in the town of Sandwich, in Barnstable County, with Cape Cod Bay along its northern shore. In 1657 two Quakers, Christopher Holder and John Copeland, arrived at Spring Hill, in the northern part of the village, and the first Society of Friends in the country took shape around them. Early members, among them families from Spring Hill, were persecuted for their faith, but the meeting endured, and as the Sandwich Meeting of Friends it is said to be the longest continuous Quaker meeting in the nation.

  • A meetinghouse from 1811The Friends worshiped in two earlier meetinghouses before building the present one on Quaker Road in 1811, which replaced the second.
  • A family mill for 185 yearsBenjamin Nye, born in 1620, was one of the first settlers of Sandwich. Around 1685 he set up a gristmill on a brook fed by a small spring pond that lay south of his house, and his descendants kept it running until 1867. Seven generations of one family lived in the house, and the Benjamin Nye Homestead is now on the National Register.
  • Jam at Green Briar since 1903In 1903 Ida Putnam began making jam at Spring Hill, in an old Nye family house, and named her business the Green Briar Jam Kitchen. The Thornton W. Burgess Society took over the kitchen in 1979, and in 1984 the site became the Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen.
  • Thornton W. Burgess's boyhood woodsThornton W. Burgess, the children's author, spent his boyhood in Sandwich exploring its woods and wetlands. He said the local bogs and springs gave him some of the settings for his stories, and after he moved away he still returned often.
