About Rochester, Massachusetts

Rochester, a Plymouth County town of 5,717 people, sits about 10 miles from New Bedford, to its northeast. The Wampanoag people who lived along Buzzards Bay called this land Sippican, the name of the local tribe. By one state list's count, Europeans settled here in 1638, though the town's own date is 1679. On June 4, 1686, Rochester was incorporated and named for Rochester in England, the home of some of its early settlers.

The first town reached all the way to the sea. It took in the land that became Mattapoisett, Marion and part of Wareham, and its shipbuilders and whalers worked out of Mattapoisett Harbor. Wareham split off in 1739, Marion in 1852 and Mattapoisett in 1857, and the last two took the entire shoreline with them. Rochester turned inland to homes and farms, and in 2012 it adopted a Right-to-Farm bylaw to protect its farmland.

  • Racing the river since 1934Every Memorial Day, starting in 1934, boat racers have followed the Mattapoisett River out of Rochester and down to Mattapoisett. The river begins at Snipatuit Pond, a shallow 710-acre pond in Rochester, and runs 11.6 miles south to Buzzards Bay. Many older residents know it by another name, the Herring Run.
  • From cabin boy to captainJoseph Bates, born in Rochester in 1792, first went to sea as a cabin boy and worked his way up to command a ship. Later he helped found Sabbatarian Adventism, and its followers went on to create the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
  • Tristam Burges, born in 1770Tristam Burges was born in Rochester in 1770. He finished first in his class at the college now known as Brown University, led Rhode Island's highest court as its chief justice for a short time, and then spent ten years in Congress.
