About McKinleyville, California

McKinleyville is an unincorporated community of 16,262 people in Humboldt County, about 5.25 miles north of Arcata. The Wiyot and Yurok people still live here on their traditional lands. The town grew out of several small settlements. Joe Dows came to Dows Prairie in the 1860s, Minor grew up to the south late in the 19th century, and workers for the California Barrel Company settled Calville farther south.

After the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, the people of Minor gave their community his name. A post office called McKinleyville opened in 1903. It shut in 1921 and did not open again until 1955. Today Dows Prairie, Minor and Calville are all counted as McKinleyville, which grew from 15,177 people in 2010 but has never become a city.

  • A eucalyptus plantingThe History of Humboldt County describes a Mr. Zehndner who cared deeply about forestry. He put that interest to work at McKinleyville, where he grew eucalyptus on two hundred acres.
  • A trail on a logging railroadThe Hammond Trail runs for more than 5 miles along the old railroad grade of the Hammond Lumber Company. It starts at the Hammond Bridge over the Mad River, near Mad River County Park, and heads north to Clam Beach County Park. It belongs to the Pacific Coast Bike Route and the California Coastal Trail.
  • An airport chosen for fogHumboldt County's biggest airport, Arcata-Eureka, sits in McKinleyville. Its site was picked as an experimental field for testing landings in heavy fog, because this stretch of coast is among the foggiest places in Northern California.
  • Pony Express DaysMcKinleyville holds Pony Express Days, which went by the name Azalea Festival from 2005 to 2008. The town also hosts the Clam Beach Run.
