About Trinidad, California
Spanish explorer Bruno de Heceta and his partner Bodega y Quadra brought two ships into Trinidad Bay. They dropped anchor on June 9, 1775. Two days later, on Trinity Sunday, they claimed the bay for King Charles III of Spain. They named the area for the Most Holy Trinity.
On December 31, 1914, the biggest ocean wave ever recorded on the West Coast hit Trinidad Head. Keeper Fred L. Harrington watched it wash over Pilot Rock and break over the bluff. It shook the lighthouse and put out its light, and he had it lit again within four hours.
- The first people of the bayThe Yurok people built the village of Tsurai on the bluffs above Trinidad Bay long before Europeans came. They lived there for thousands of years and left the village in 1916.
