About Melwood, Maryland
Melwood is a census-designated place of 3,977 people in Prince George's County, directly east of Andrews Air Force Base. The Census Bureau first drew its boundaries for the 2010 count, when 3,051 people lived here.
Its recorded history begins after the Civil War. In 1867 the Freedmen's Bureau was working to open a school for Black residents near Centreville. A white landowner named William Niles gave the Bureau one acre south of Centreville, beside the road to the Woodyard, and the school opened there in 1868.
- Niles Chapel, built in 1877For its first years, the congregation held its services inside the Niles schoolhouse. In 1877 it built a chapel of its own, called Niles Chapel, which also became known as St. Luke's Methodist Episcopal Church.
- A Rosenwald school in 1929The school and chapel became the heart of a small Black community called Meadows. By the late 1920s Meadows also had a social hall, and in 1929 Rosenwald Funds paid for a new school for its Black children.
- Lost to Andrews in 1942In 1942 the United States took the land to create Andrews Air Force Base, and that taking brought the Meadows community to an end. The chapel's cemetery is still there, marking where the community once stood.
