About Merion Station, Pennsylvania

Merion Station is a community of 5,741 people in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, on the Philadelphia Main Line, right on the city's edge. Welsh Quaker families arrived with William Penn in 1682 and named the area for Merioneth, the part of Wales many of them had left behind.

In 1695 their meeting began a meeting house at what is now Montgomery Avenue and Meetinghouse Lane. The minutes asked members to find stone and haul timber for it. Friends have held worship there every week ever since, even on days when a single member made it, and it later became the first Welsh building named a National Historic Landmark.

“To be Nation right and State right, we must first be Community right.”
Wikipedia
  • Model MerionThe magazine editor Edward W. Bok founded the Merion Civic Association in 1913. Under that motto it paved streets, improved the lighting, put up cast-iron street signs, strengthened fire and police protection and planned tree plantings. The work drew national notice, and in 1917 Theodore Roosevelt wrote an article called "Model Merion" for Bok's magazine.
  • The Merion Tribute HouseAfter World War I, the civic association wanted a community center to honor the 81 Merion Station men who had served. Workers took the house down and raised a new hall in Gothic patterns on its foundation, using local stone shaped right on the site and cutting every window mullion by hand. The association still meets there.
  • The Barnes on Latches LaneFrom the 1920s, the drug entrepreneur Albert C. Barnes kept his famous collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings at his Latches Lane estate, a granite mansion surrounded by gardens. The paintings later moved to a new museum on Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, which recreates the original Merion gallery. The Merion grounds stayed open to visitors as the Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation.
  • Horse races on the greenThousands of people once came to the General Wayne Racetrack to watch horses run on the ground that is now General Wayne Park. Decades after the track closed, developer Ralph Madway built the Merion Park neighborhood around it. The General Wayne Inn on Montgomery Avenue, listed on the National Register, now houses the Chabad Center of the Main Line.
