About Merrimac, Virginia

Merrimac is a community of 2,858 people in Montgomery County, lying 3 miles south of Blacksburg. It grew up around a coal mine that started commercial work in 1903 and soon became the most important mine in the county, employing about 150 miners. One source says the place got its name because coal from the local mines was burned aboard the CSS Virginia, which had been the USS Merrimack.

In 1909 the waters of Lick Branch broke into the Merrimac Mine and flooded it. The mine sat idle until World War I raised the demand for coal so much that pumping the water out became worth the cost, and the miners went back to work.

  • Bunker Hill and the company hotelThe mine company built houses for its workers north of Lick Branch, within half a mile of the mine, in a neighborhood local people came to call Bunker Hill. A commissary near the mine sold food and supplies to miners and their families, a post office was added later, and a two-story company hotel gave rooms to new miners and visitors.
  • Telegraph before BlacksburgThe mining operation was wired with a telegraph line a few years before Blacksburg, the larger town just to the north, had one of its own.
  • Merrimac Mines, 1904 to 1935A post office named Merrimac Mines opened in 1904, a year after commercial mining began, and it served the community until 1935.
