About Middleburg Heights, Ohio

Middleburg Heights is a city of 16,004 people in Cuyahoga County, about 11 miles southwest of downtown Cleveland. Its land belongs to the Connecticut Western Reserve, which Connecticut held back for its own use in 1786, when it gave up its claim to other western lands and handed them to the new federal government. Jared Hickcox and his family, who came from Waterbury, Connecticut, were the first European settlers in what became Middleburg Township, and in 1928 Middleburg Heights became a village of its own.

  • Woodvale's half-acre startWoodvale Cemetery began in the mid-1800s, when the Klink family gave half an acre of their land as a burial ground. The oldest marked grave there belongs to Fred G. Klink, who died in 1858. In 1876 Frank M. Stearns proposed the name Woodvale, taken from the wooded valley next to the burial ground.
  • A union cemetery in 1931In 1908 a fire burned the caretaker's house at Woodvale and destroyed many of the cemetery's records. Berea and the Village of Middleburg Heights took joint ownership in 1931 and made it a nonprofit union cemetery, which by then spread over 35 acres. The Fowles, Sprague and Stearns families are buried there, and Fowles Road carries one of those names.
  • A mayor for 37 yearsMiddleburg Heights is run by a mayor and council, and the mayor sits on the council without a vote. Gary Starr held the office for 37 years before he announced his resignation on November 27, 2018. Matthew Castelli filled the vacancy and took office on January 8, 2019.
