About Middletown, Rhode Island
Middletown is a town of 17,075 people in Newport County, set in the middle of Aquidneck Island with Portsmouth to the north and Newport to the south, which is how it got its name. Its land was once the northern part of Newport. Freeholders there complained of unfair taxes and a population that kept growing, so they petitioned the General Assembly to become separate. The Assembly set the land apart in 1731, and Middletown was incorporated in 1743.
For generations Middletown was the farm town of the island. Starting in the 1980s, businesses spread along East Main Road and West Main Road, and by the late 1990s that stretch had become the central business district of all Aquidneck Island. Most of the farmland that remains lies on the east side of town.
- Berkeley's WhitehallPhilosopher George Berkeley reached Newport in January 1729. He bought a 96-acre farm in north Newport, worked by enslaved people. He enlarged its house to his own plan, calling it Whitehall after an old royal palace. There he wrote Alciphron and began a Philosophical Society, later the Redwood Library. Leaving in 1731, he gave Yale the farm and books to fund three scholars.
- A British general seizedIn 1973, when Prescott Farm faced demolition, Doris Duke's Newport Restoration Foundation bought its 40 acres and opened the farm to visitors.
- The windmill on the sealBoyd's Windmill went up in Portsmouth in 1810, built by John Peterson, and William Boyd bought it in 1815. The Boyds doubled the eight-sided smock mill's sails from four to eight; it stands about 30 feet tall. Benjamin Boyd removed the vanes in 1916 and powered it with a gasoline engine. Given to the Middletown Historical Society in 1990, the mill was moved to Paradise Valley Park and restored, and it appears on the town seal.
- Two doors at Witherbee SchoolIn the early 1900s John Coggeshall built this one-room schoolhouse on Green End Avenue for the town. Topped by a tower, it has separate front doors for boys and girls, and each leads into its own entry hall. Classes ended in the 1940s, the school joined the National Register in 1989, and today the Middletown Historical Society uses it as an educational center.
- Sachuest Point since 1970The national wildlife refuge on Sachuest Point was founded in 1970 on 70 acres donated by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Land from the Navy later enlarged it to 242 acres between the Sakonnet River and Rhode Island Sound, and more than 200 kinds of birds use it.
