About Milford, Maine

Milford is a town of 3,069 people in Penobscot County, facing the city of Old Town from the other side of the Penobscot River. Settlers knew the place as Sunkhaze plantation until 1833, when it was incorporated under the name Milford.

Water power drove the town's growth in the 19th century, when a big sawmill on the river cut lumber that mostly went out by ship from Bangor. The large Bodwell Water Power Co. sawmills, dating from 1889, belonged to Maine Governor Joseph Robinson Bodwell. They burned in 1891, and the fire nearly destroyed the village as well.

  • Maine's biggest power plantIn 1906 the Bodwell Water Power Company built a hydroelectric plant at the east end of the Milford Dam, on the site of a large sawmill from the 1880s and 1890s. It was Maine's largest when it opened. Wallace C. Johnson, a civil engineer who had worked on power projects at Niagara Falls, designed its Romanesque brick building, later called the Milford Plant of Bangor Hydro. The dam gave Milford its slogan, "Best little town by a dam site."
  • A Queen Anne church from 1883The congregation bought its land at the corner of Main and Ferry Streets in 1883, and building the church took two years. Asa T. Wing of Old Town designed it and served as contractor. Today the Milford Congregational Church has a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • The doctor who counted caloriesLulu Hunt Peters, whose parents Thomas and Alice Hunt lived in Milford, grew up to be a physician and a syndicated health columnist. In 1918 she published Diet and Health: With Key to the Calories. The best seller made her the first person to bring calorie counting to a wide audience as a way to lose weight.
