About Old Town, Maine
Old Town is a city of 7,431 people in Penobscot County, built mostly on Marsh Island, with the Penobscot River on its east side and the Stillwater River on its west. The Abenaki called the place Pannawambskek, "where the ledges spread out," for the rapids and drops in the riverbed. In the 1680s French Jesuits founded a Catholic mission at the site, and they gave the settlement the name Panaouamské.
After Great Britain won the Seven Years' War and took over French lands, English pioneers settled the area in 1774. On Indian Island in the Penobscot stood the largest Penobscot village, which the English called Indian Old Town. That island lies inside the city limits today, and it is still the home of the Penobscot Nation.
- Named for a Penobscot villageIn 1820 the town was set off from neighboring Orono, itself named for a Penobscot sachem. It took the name Old Town because the Penobscot village lay within it. Over time people stopped calling the village by that name, and it moved over to the far younger American town on the other side of the river.
- Lumber mills on the rapidsIn the 1800s the rapids along the Penobscot, just upstream from the head of tide at Bangor, gave Old Town the water power to run mills that sawed lumber. Every year the river carried millions of board feet of logs, both spruce and pine, down to those mills. The city still has a paper mill, now owned by Nine Dragons Paper Holdings Limited.
- Home of Old Town CanoeOld Town Canoe Co., a major maker of canoes and kayaks, has made its home in this city for over 100 years, and its boats have carried the town's name far beyond Maine.
- A church by Henry VaughanSt. James Episcopal Church was designed by Henry Vaughan, an English architect who worked out of Boston, and the church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
