About Milliken, Colorado

Milliken is a town of 8,386 people in Weld County, part of the Greeley metro area on the Front Range. The first settlement near the townsite was called Hillsboro, and it began in the 1860s as a trading post where farm goods moved along the Denver, Laramie, and Northwestern Railroad.

A post office named Milliken opened on November 10, 1909, and the town was incorporated on October 1, 1910. It took its name from John D. Milliken, a judge, and it absorbed Hillsboro that same year. Fires in the 1910s then burned much of the young town, and the railroad it had grown up beside was abandoned in 1917.

  • The Daniels School, 1911James Daniels gave the school district one acre in 1879, and a wood-frame schoolhouse stood there until it was sold and hauled away to make room for the brick building of 1911. A partition divided its two rooms, first through fourth grades on one side and fifth through eighth on the other, until classes ended in 1959. It honors Henry Daniels, James's brother and an early Big Thompson Valley pioneer, and joined the National Register in 2005.
  • Potato decks and new housesFarming carried Milliken through two world wars and the Depression. Two large potato decks were built here in the 1950s, and a housing boom followed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The town's roads were finally paved in 1985 and 1986.
  • Library in the old stationWhen the police moved to a new station in 2009, their old building held a coffee shop and then, for many years, a computer lab. In 2021 the Glenn A. Jones MD Memorial Library put a branch there, side by side with Mill Haus Coffee for five years. The branch later moved into part of Milliken Intermediate School and became the Milliken Public Library.
