About Berthoud, Colorado

Berthoud is a town of 10,332 people in Larimer County, with a small part reaching into Weld County. White settlers came to the valley of the Little Thompson in the early 1860s, after the Colorado Gold Rush. In 1872 Lewis Cross, a Central City miner who had turned to ranching, claimed the first homestead at the spot where the Colorado Central Railroad meant to cross the creek.

The tracks came through in 1877, bringing a depot, a section house and a water tank to the site. The little settlement called Little Thompson was then renamed for Edward L. Berthoud, the Swiss-born chief engineer who had surveyed the line, and its post office opened on April 4, 1878. The town was incorporated ten years later, on August 28, 1888.

  • Moved up the bluffThe first townsite sat on the river bottom, so the railroad's steam locomotives had to strain hard to climb out of the valley. At the Colorado Central's urging, in the winter of 1883-84, townspeople set several buildings on wheels, and teams of draft animals hauled them one mile north to new ground on the bluff above the river. Berthoud has stood there ever since.
  • Fire and a hose companyIn 1886 the Welch Addition doubled Berthoud's size, and the town reached south of Mountain Avenue for the first time. The next year fire destroyed the Davis & Hartford Mercantile, and residents hurried to form a hose company to fight the next blaze. After incorporation in 1888, the new town board hired a marshal, who kept the peace and lit the street lamps.
  • The Garden Spot of ColoradoFarmers built reservoirs and ditches fed by the Little and Big Thompson Rivers to water the dry uplands, raising alfalfa, sugar beets, wheat, corn and barley and fattening sheep and cattle. Berthoud launched the sugar beet harvest in October 1941. Growers loaded beets into boxcars at rural dumping stations for the factories in Loveland and Longmont, and during World War II German prisoners of war and migrant workers from Mexico helped bring in the crop.
  • Bimson Blacksmith ShopThe Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum keeps the Bimson Blacksmith Shop, which joined the National Register in 1981. The young settlement's first businesses included a blacksmith shop and a mercantile, joined by a modest grain elevator and a log cabin used for both school and church.
