About Millville, Massachusetts

Millville is a town of 3,174 people in Worcester County, where the Blackstone River crosses into Rhode Island. The Nipmuc people lived on this land first, and European settlement here dates to 1662. For centuries the area belonged to bigger towns, first Mendon and later Blackstone, which had been split off from Mendon itself.

Millville finally broke away from Blackstone and became a town of its own in 1916. Its public library opened off Route 122 in 1919, and Millville and Blackstone still run their schools together. From the early 1900s until around 1980, almost 98% of the town's people were Irish Catholic.

  • A meetinghouse from 1769South Parish built the Chestnut Hill Meetinghouse, at the corner of Chestnut and Thayer streets, in 1769 and worshipped there into the 1800s. The plain frame building, two and a half stories tall, saves its only decoration for the pilasters and pediment framing its doors, and the meeting room still has 26 box pews. Few 18th-century meetinghouses with the main entrance on the long side survive, and this one joined the National Register in 1984.
  • A lock on the Blackstone CanalThe town sits within the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor and still has a well-preserved lock from the Blackstone Canal, the waterway that once linked Worcester with Providence. Work on the canal started in 1825, and it opened three years after that.
  • The Homer in the Gloamin'Gabby Hartnett, the oldest of 14 children, was born in Woonsocket, but his father moved the family across the state line when he went to work at Banigan's Millville Rubber Shop. Gabby grew up in Millville and played youth ball in the Blackstone Valley League, then joined the Chicago Cubs in 1922. In 1938, with darkness falling at Wrigley Field, his walk-off home run lifted the Cubs into first place. He entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.
