About Northbridge, Massachusetts

Northbridge is a town of 16,335 people in Worcester County, where the Blackstone and Mumford rivers run past a string of mill villages. In 1662 Great John and three other Nipmuc leaders sold the land for the Mendon plantation. In 1727 this corner became the North End of the new town of Uxbridge, and it had its own constable by 1736.

In 1766 Uxbridge chose to build a new meeting-house close to the old one, far from the farms in the north. The North End asked to be spared the expense and allowed to leave, but Uxbridge said no, so in 1771 the farmers carried their case to the General Court. On July 14, 1772, it became the District of Northbridge, a name meaning it lay north of Uxbridge. The next year it voted to put its own meeting-house on top of the hill, and in April 1775, 31 of its men marched to Roxbury at the Lexington Alarm.

“It is said there is hardly an idle person or tavern-haunter in the place.”
Rev. Peter Whitney, 1793
  • A cotton mill in 1809About 1727 Seth Terry put up a sawmill and ironworks where the Mumford River falls. The Fletchers later ran the forge, and Paul Whitin, a blacksmith with probably six months of school or less, married in. In 1826 Whitin and his sons built a brick mill, still standing, on the forge site.
  • A better cotton pickerIn 1830 John C. Whitin started designing a better cotton picker on two lathes worth fifteen dollars or less apiece. The Whitin sons opened the Whitin Machine Works on the riverbank in 1831 and sold their first picker in 1834. For years it made most American pickers. The 306-foot New Shop rose in 1847, and by 1889 the floor space neared eleven acres.
  • Scythes made by machineJames Nutting acquired the water rights at Riverdale in 1753 and put up two grist-mills and a sawmill there, among them the town's first grist-mill. In 1852 Harvey Waters began making scythes in a new stone mill there, using machines he had invented. The county history of 1889 calls them the first scythes ever made by machinery anywhere in the world.
  • The Linwood Mill of 1866In 1866 Charles P. and James F. Whitin put up the brick Linwood Mill, which made cambrics, sateens and shirting. Around it they put up tenements, dormitories and duplexes for the workers, and the village was settled mostly by French Canadians. It is the best preserved of the Whitin mill complexes. Since 2011 the old mill has held apartments for older adults, while a restaurant and offices fill its ground floor.
  • Memorial Hall to the post officeThe Whitinsville Social Library started in 1844 with Sarah Fletcher's $100 legacy. Memorial Hall, built by the Whitin brothers, hosted its first town meeting in 1876. In 1922 four Whitin daughters gave the Whitin Community Center in their father's honor, and its swimmers reached the Olympics in 1932 and 1936. Whitinsville's brick and cast stone post office, a Colonial Revival building of 1938 with a cupola on its hip roof, joined the National Register in 1987.
