About Sutton, Massachusetts
A group of Boston residents bought the Sutton land from the Indians in 1704. Its rich soil drew settlers quickly. Textile factories and a paper mill opened about 1800. Industry faded when the railroads passed the town by, and farming carried Sutton on with fruit, dairy and market gardens.
In 1717 the Great Snow buried the settlers' cabins in Sutton. A local Native man spotted smoke rising through the snow from the Johnson family chimney. He dug in and rescued the family.
- A home of championship golfSince 1962, Sutton's Pleasant Valley Country Club has hosted major professional golf events. The Women's PGA Championship was played there in the late 1960s and again from 1970 to 1974.
