About Oxford, Massachusetts
Oxford is a town of 13,347 people in Worcester County, set in a valley along the French River. The Pegan band of the Nipmuc held this land until 1681 and 1682, when Black James, constable of the praying town of Chaubunagungamaug, signed a deed that sold it to investors including Joseph Dudley and Robert Thompson. In 1687 Thompson sent 52 French Huguenots, Protestant exiles he had come to know in London, to settle it.
The French raised a stone fort in 1694, but they gave up the settlement after John Johnson and his three children were killed. A second try, from 1699 to 1704, failed during Queen Anne's War. English families then settled for good, the town was incorporated in 1713, and by 1720 about 30 of those families had a church and a minister. The river still carries the name of the French.

- Grapes that outlived the colonyThe Huguenots planted a garden on the west side of their fort on Fort Hill, with asparagus, grapes, plums, cherries and gooseberries, according to John Mayo, who later farmed the hill. The settlers left, but their plants stayed. In 1819 grapes, currants and roses nearly made a hedge along the old fort line, and in 1822 the poet Lydia Sigourney mailed a leaf from the vine to Rev. Abiel Holmes.
- Hamilton on Camp HillRice and the townspeople held funeral honors there when news of George Washington's death arrived. In June 1800, as the army disbanded, Gen. Alexander Hamilton reviewed the brigade, dined with its officers, and addressed the troops for about half an hour next morning.
- Clara Barton's hometownClara Barton was born on Christmas Day of 1821 in the Cape-style house her father, Stephen Barton, had built in 1818. She spent 11 years teaching in Oxford's schools. Later she cared for wounded soldiers at Antietam and Fredericksburg, and in 1881 she took office as president of the Red Cross's American branch. After her death in 1912 she came home by train and was buried in North Cemetery.
- Flannel at Hodges VillageIn 1826 the Oxford Woolen Company bought the Nichols mill, and its broadcloths became known across the country. George Hodges bought the woolen mill in 1846, and by 1879 it was weaving fifty thousand yards of flannel a month. The village kept his name, and after the floods of 1936 the Hodges Village Dam was raised there on the French River by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1959.
- A stone bridge for $2,200Edwin Bartlett, owner of the North Oxford textile mills, asked the town to replace a wooden span over the French River with an iron truss. The town chose granite instead, and Worcester masons finished the arch in six months in 1889 for $2,200. Bartlett's Bridge still carries Clara Barton Road and joined the National Register in 2000.
