About Milo, Maine

The Sign of the Beaver, a 1983 children's novel by Elizabeth George Speare, drew on a true story from Milo. In 1802 a teenage boy was left to care for his family's cabin. A bear ruined his supplies, and local Native people helped him.

Benjamin Sargent and his son Theophilus came from Methuen, Massachusetts, and settled here on May 2, 1802. The town was incorporated in 1823. It took its name from Milo of Croton, a celebrated athlete of ancient Magna Graecia.

  • The railroad villageThe village of Derby, inside Milo, grew up as a company town of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. It held the second largest railroad car repair shop in New England.
