About Sebec, Maine
Ezekiel Chase made the first settlement at Sebec in September 1803, when he moved his family here from what is now Bingham. The Lyfords came from Canterbury, New Hampshire, the next spring. The town took its name from Sebecco, the Native name for the lake.
In September 1814 the British occupied Bangor. Men from Dover, Foxcroft and Sebec formed a company, with Ezekiel Chase as captain, and marched to help. Before they reached Bangor, they learned the town had surrendered, and they turned for home.
- A county firstSebec was the first town incorporated in Piscataquis County. Its act passed on February 28, 1812, and Foxcroft came next.
