About Mississippi State, Mississippi

Mississippi State is a community of 4,968 people in Oktibbeha County, about 2 miles east of Starkville. Its name covers the land around Mississippi State University, and part of the campus lies inside Starkville. Mail here goes to Mississippi State, Mississippi 39762. The school and the town around it got their start on February 28, 1878. On that day the state Legislature created Mississippi's new Agricultural and Mechanical College, the school that grew into the university.

  • First students in 1880The new college took its first students in the fall of 1880. Its president was Stephen D. Lee. He had gone to West Point, and he had been a general in the Civil War.
  • Renamed in 1932 and 1958The Legislature changed the school's name to Mississippi State College in 1932. In 1958 it changed the name again, to Mississippi State University.
  • A cotton mill for a classroomIn 1900 the college built the Textile Building for its new Textile School. Inside was a small cotton mill. Students learned each step of making cloth goods from raw cotton. The school closed after a short run, but the building stayed. In 1975 its National Register papers called it the oldest school building left on campus.
