About Moorefield, Virginia
Moorefield is a community of 4,421 people in the Ashburn area of eastern Loudoun County. Its land once belonged to Dr. Claude Moore, a physician who ranked among the county's biggest landowners during his life, and the place carries his name.
When Moore died in 1991, his property here became an asset of his foundation. Acting as the overall planner, the foundation sold the 591 acres in parcels to developers, who built homes and businesses on them, and the money from those sales pays for the foundation's educational grants. The census called the place Moorefield Station in 2010 and Moorefield by 2020.
- A radiology professor from 1930Claude Moore moved to Washington, D.C., in 1930 to teach radiology at George Washington University. Years earlier, in 1918, he had gone to France with the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the First World War.
- $300,000 for a libraryMoore gave above all to education. One of his gifts was $300,000 to the University of Virginia toward a new building for medical study, and the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library opened its doors there in 1976. Moorefield Station Elementary School, like the development around it, is named for him.
- Built around a Metrorail stopMoorefield is still being built as a mixed-use development around the Ashburn station, the western end of Metrorail's Silver Line. It lies about 10 miles south of Leesburg, the county seat, and 31 miles west-northwest of Washington, D.C.
