About Mount Plymouth, Florida

Mount Plymouth is a community of 4,417 people in eastern Lake County, on State Road 46 between Mount Dora and Sanford. It was settled in the 1920s, during the Florida land boom, as a planned golf resort. Its center was the Mount Plymouth Hotel and Country Club, which opened in 1926 after costing $350,000, with 150 rooms and its own air strip.

The resort's backers planned four 18-hole courses modeled on the St. Andrews course in Scotland. The Florida real estate crash of 1926 stopped work on three of them, so only one was ever finished. That course, the Mount Plymouth Golf Club, stayed open until 2007, and Lucia Mida made the town her temporary home while she played in Florida state golf tournaments.

  • Babe Ruth flew inThe hotel quickly became the busiest spot in the area. Famous guests, among them Babe Ruth, Al Capone, Connie Mack and Kate Smith, could land right at the hotel's own airfield instead of taking the train or the road.
  • A castle among the cottagesDevelopers Carl Dann and Sam Stoltz helped lay out a neighborhood of houses around the country club's golf course, meant to bring in tourists and winter residents. For one of his early houses, Stoltz took Blarney Castle in Ireland as his model.
  • A school from 1959 to 1983In 1959 Florida Central Academy moved into the old hotel and its grounds. It started out as a boarding school for boys and began taking girls in 1971. Its classes ran from grade 7 through grade 12, for local students as well as students who came from around the world. The academy closed in June 1983. County health officials condemned the empty building, vandals moved in, and fires in 1986 and 1987 destroyed it.
