About Naranja, Florida
Naranja is a community of 13,509 people in Miami-Dade County, about 25 miles southwest of downtown Miami. M. L. Albury established the settlement in 1905, and its residents first asked for the name Silver Palm. The post office refused it because another place already went by Silver Palm, so they agreed on Naranja, Spanish for orange, after the many groves around them.
The Florida East Coast Railroad once ran through the area, and Naranja was one of the stops along its line. The community has grown quickly since then, and the census counted 8,303 people in 2010 and 13,509 in 2020.
- Say it Na-Ran-JahOrange groves once filled this part of South Florida, which is why the settlers picked the Spanish word for the fruit. Locals have their own way of saying it, though, and pronounce the name "Na-Ran-Jah."
- Chapman Elementary since 1976Dr. William A. Chapman Elementary School opened in 1976 and still serves Naranja from inside the community. The old Naranja Elementary School was later replaced by Coconut Palm K-8 Academy, about 3 miles away, and its building became home to an alternative school, now called Miami MacArthur Educational Center.
