About Princeton, Florida

Princeton is an unincorporated community in Miami-Dade County, 6 miles northeast of Homestead, with downtown Miami 24 miles to the northeast. It began in the 1900s as a small town with a depot on the Florida East Coast Railroad. In 1905 Gaston Drake came here with a group of Princeton University graduates, and they named the community for the school they had attended.

  • Called Modello in 1904The Model Land Company started the town in 1904 and called it Modello. That name lasted about a year, until Drake's group gave the place the name of their alma mater.
  • Painted black and orangeMany of the town's buildings were painted in Princeton University's colors, black and orange.
  • Lumber until 1923Gaston Drake ran a sawmill and lumber company at Princeton. It shipped lumber to Miami, the Florida Keys and Cuba, and it kept running until the local timber was used up in 1923.
