About Goulds, Florida
Goulds is a community of 11,446 people in Miami-Dade County, about 20 miles southwest of downtown Miami. Homesteaders settled the land in 1900, and in 1903 the Florida East Coast Railway put in a siding here. The stop was first called Gould's Siding, for Lyman B. Gould of Indiana, who led a crew cutting trees into railroad ties, and the name was later shortened to Goulds.
For years trains rarely stopped at the flag station, and a small store open only in winter was the one sign that anyone lived there. Tomatoes changed that. By 1912 Goulds shipped more tomatoes than any other point south of Miami, and people called it the Gateway to the Redlands. Packing houses lined the Old Dixie Highway, and saloons served the field workers who came and went, which gave the young town a rough name.
- Catsup for the NorthGrant, Beall & Co. of Chicago built a plant at Goulds in early 1911 to turn overripe tomatoes into pulp. The pulp was shipped to markets in the north, where it became the main ingredient in Heinz and Armour catsup.
- Too much crop for ten carsFarmers arrived from all over the United States for the winter growing season. They leased their land, most of it from John C. Baile's Baile Farm, and worked plots of less than 40 acres. The harvest outgrew the railroad, and by February 1911 the packing houses struggled to ship it from a siding that held only ten cars.
- Rebuilt after 1919 and 1926A tornado in 1919 and the 1926 Miami Hurricane wrecked most of the packing houses along the highway. Each time, the packing houses were built again.
- Cauley Square restoredCauley Square, an old railway town inside Goulds, was bought by Mary Ann Ballard in 1949, and she went on to restore it.
