About Navy, Virginia

Navy is a community of 4,327 people in Fairfax County, and the 2020 census was the first to count it as a census designated place. Long before it had that name, people knew the crossroads here as Thompson's Corner, or Thompson's Cross Roads. In 1892 the crossroads was about to get a post office of its own, and the post office needed an official name.

  • Navy, chosen by vote in 1892The obvious choice, Thompson, was already taken. A post office by that name had opened in Louisa County in December 1833, and the Post Office Department would not allow the name twice. Instead the department mailed a list of approved names, all of them short. Local people voted, and on August 8, 1892, Navy won. With four letters, it was one of the longest names on the list.
  • A new school in 1956On March 18, 1956, Navy dedicated its new elementary school, built next to the old one-room Navy Schoolhouse. Three women at the ceremony had taught in that one-room school years before.
