About New Bremen, Ohio

New Bremen is a village of 3,034 people in Auglaize County, founded by German immigrants and named for Bremen, Germany. Bavarians and Hanoverians traveled from Bremen to America, crossed West Virginia and came down the Ohio River to Cincinnati. There they formed the City of Bremen Society, whose 33 members signed a charter to buy 80 acres of Ohio land for a town. Farming in German Township began in 1832. The plat of Bremen went on record in 1833, and 102 shares of land were handed out by lottery.

The young village grew slowly. Its farmers had few markets they could reach, malaria struck, and hauling goods across the swampy ground cost a great deal. Work on the Miami Extension Canal began in 1833, but disease, the difficult labor and the Panic of 1837 slowed it down. In June 1845 the packet boat Banner finally traveled the full line from Cincinnati to Toledo, a trip of almost 250 miles, taking three days and passing New Bremen about halfway. Cheaper shipping gave local crops real cash value, and soon hundreds of freight boats and dozens of passenger boats were moving through town.

  • Whiskey for canal diggersSo few people lived around New Bremen that subcontractors offered "jiggers," 2-ounce bottles of whiskey, to draw workers to the canal. In 1849 the finished waterway was renamed the Miami & Erie Canal. Before the railroads came, it carried freight, mail and military transport, and it stayed open until 1913.
  • Restored locks downtownThe old canal locks in downtown New Bremen have been restored, and a lock keeper's house now stands with them. A canal marker at West Monroe Street and South Washington Street tells how the work pushed north from the town.
  • Where the St. Marys beginsNew Bremen sits at the headwaters of the St. Mary's River, which feeds the Maumee. That puts the village's southern edge at the far southern tip of the St. Lawrence River Basin, an area of 519,000 square miles. The Maumee basin, at 8316 square miles, is the biggest of Lake Erie's tributaries and the one that reaches farthest south.
  • Bicycles and Crown EquipmentThe village is home to the Bicycle Museum of America, and Crown Equipment Corporation keeps its world headquarters in New Bremen.
