About Newfields, New Hampshire

Newfields is a town of 1,769 people in Rockingham County, on the tidal Squamscott River. Settlers arrived in 1638, when the land was part of Exeter, and the village was already called Newfield Village by 1681. It became part of Newmarket in 1727 and later went by South Newmarket, a parish of that town, until it was incorporated as a town of its own in 1849.

In 1841 the Boston and Maine Railroad extended its line to the village. Dr. John M. Brodhead promised the town his own library and $10,000 in 1880 if it would take back the old name, and in 1895 South Newmarket became Newfields. The census used the new name from 1900 on.

  • A bridge that saved the villageA bridge built over the Squamscott to Stratham in 1775 made the ride to Exeter shorter just as Exeter was named the Revolutionary capital. Because the new road skirted the middle of the village, laid out along both sides of an ancient Squamscot trail, old Newfields was left as it was.
  • Boys and girls together in 1817The Methodists opened Wesleyan Academy here in 1817 with ten pupils, five of them girls, at a time when few schools put boys and girls in the same classroom. The Reverend John Brodhead was among its teachers. The school never had enough money, and in 1825 it moved to Wilbraham, Massachusetts. Newfields Elementary School stands where it stood.
  • Master Badger's first shipyardWilliam Badger, born here in 1752, trained in Kittery under Colonel James K. Hackett and worked on the warship USS Ranger. Around 1788 he went into business for himself, building ships on the Squamscott at Newfields. He later set up on a Kittery island that still carries his name, Badger's Island, and people said he built 100 vessels.
  • Two governors and a novelistMaggie Hassan and Chris Sununu, both governors of New Hampshire, have lived in Newfields. So did the novelist Anita Shreve, author of The Weight of Water, which became a film, and The Pilot's Wife, chosen for Oprah's Book Club in 1999.
