About Niagara, New York
Niagara is a town of 7,903 people in the southwestern part of Niagara County, and it takes its name from Niagara Falls. It was founded in 1812 as the Town of Schlosser, named for nearby Fort Schlosser. Captain Joseph Schlosser, the fort's first commander, was a German officer in British service.
Over the next century the town gave up land several times. Its eastern sections became the Town of Wheatfield in 1836, and in 1892 the new City of Niagara Falls took the western end, about half of the town's land. The Village of LaSalle was incorporated in the southeast corner in 1897, and when Niagara Falls annexed LaSalle in 1927, the town was left with 9.4 square miles. Those borders have stayed the same ever since.
- Its own police in 1954Town records mention constables keeping the peace in Niagara as far back as the early nineteenth century, but the town did not form its own police department until 1954. The department is separate from the Niagara Falls Police Department, though the two work closely together.
- First woman supervisorSylvia Virtuoso had served as Town Clerk since 1999 when she ran unopposed for Town Supervisor. She took office in 2024 as the first woman ever elected to lead the town.
- Airport, air base and quarryNiagara Falls International Airport lies partly inside the town. The New York Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserves work from here, and the Redland Quarry digs limestone in town, while the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls draw shoppers along its main roads.
