About Nicoma Park, Oklahoma

Nicoma Park began as a poultry colony planned by the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce. Developer Gilbert A. Nichols bought a 2,000-acre site in 1928, and the name joins Nichols and Oklahoma. Families bought lots of one to five acres with a home and a chicken house. They paid for them by selling eggs.

The 1929 stock market crash doomed the colony as a cooperative. A shipment of sick pullets also spread a disease that killed thousands. Even so, the community held together. Oil jobs and later the air depot that became Tinker Air Force Base kept it going, and Nicoma Park incorporated in 1959.
