About North Lauderdale, Florida

North Lauderdale is a city of 44,794 people in north-central Broward County. When it was created in 1963, the land sat at the western fringe of the county's growth, mostly pasture where the Anderson Dairy Farm grazed its cows and horses, along with fields of the Lena Lyons Stringbean Farm. Architect Morris Lapidus saw empty ground he could shape from scratch, and he planned it as "The City of Tomorrow," the first city he ever laid out.

In the late 1960s the Osias Organization bought most of the land to build single-family houses, which more and more buyers wanted. Colonel Nathan Rood led the company and also served as the city's first appointed mayor, and in April 1969 a straw vote made Michael Saraniero its first elected mayor. Affordable houses close to the beach then drew thousands of families, and a 10-year building boom through the 1970s filled the city with new neighborhoods.

“Where the rich and famous flocked to Miami Beach, regular families enamored with the Sun Belt, moved to North Lauderdale.”

  • From hotels to a cityBefore North Lauderdale, Morris Lapidus was famous worldwide for the 1950s Miami Beach resort hotel style, and his Fontainebleau, Eden Roc and Americana shaped the look of that city. Here he moved from hotels to city planning. His playful "beacons" still stand out around town, and the Boulevard of Champions follows his curving, amoeba-like line.
  • Two old places folded inBefore joining the city, Village Park and Broadview-Pompano Park each stood on their own as census-designated places. The 2000 count found 895 people in Village Park and 5,314 in Broadview-Pompano Park. Village Park has since become part of North Lauderdale, and Broadview-Pompano Park is now one of the city's neighborhoods.
  • North Lauderdale DaysEach year the city throws open its pool to everyone for North Lauderdale Days, a long-running celebration with vendors and live music that ends in fireworks. At Halloween, Hampton Pines Park puts on the Haunted Hamptons, and City Hall hosts a Christmas event.
