About North Olmsted, Ohio
North Olmsted is a city in Cuyahoga County, with 32,442 residents recorded in the 2020 census. Lorain Road crosses the community, while Rocky River Reservation contains wooded river bends. The city's early story joins David Stearns, the first permanent settler, with the unusual book collection remembered as the Oxcart Library.
- A Name for BooksIn 1829, Lenox residents voted to rename their township Olmsted and received 500 books belonging to Aaron Olmsted's heirs.
- The Oxcart LibraryThose books traveled by oxcart from Hartford, Connecticut, and a marker reports that 125 remain at the North Olmsted Public Library.
- First Settler and SchoolDavid Stearns built a log cabin on the Lorain Road ridge in 1816 and gave it to the town for its first schoolhouse in 1827.
- From Township to CityNorth Olmsted became a city in 1909, after the area had previously been called Plum Creek Township, Kingston, Lenox, and Olmsted.
- Eleven Square MilesNorth Olmsted covers 11.67 square miles, all classified as land by the United States Census Bureau.
