About Norton, West Virginia
Norton is a community of 336 people in Randolph County, about 6.5 miles west of Elkins. For about half a century it was a coal town, and from the early 1900s until the late 1950s the West Virginia Coal and Coke Company ran it.
The company owned far more than the mine itself. Miners' families bought their goods at the company store, kept their money in the company bank and sent their children to the Norton Grade School.
- Lumber and woodworkingCoal was not Norton's only work. The West Virginia Encyclopedia lists Norton with Elkins, Beverly, Dailey and Mill Creek as the Randolph County places with large lumber and woodworking operations.
- A post office until 2011Norton kept its own post office for decades after the coal company left in the late 1950s. The office finally closed on November 12, 2011.
- Norton Community ChurchThe town's church belongs to no denomination. The Norton Community Church outlasted the mine, the company store and the bank, and it still holds services for the people of Norton.
