About Norway, Indiana
The town was laid out in 1845 as Mount Walleston, but it soon took the name Norway. As that name shows, it was an early Norwegian settlement. One of those pioneers, Hans Erasmus Hiorth, bought a thousand acres of the best land nearby.
About 1855, Reverend Abraham Snyder built a tannery at Norway. He tanned hides with bark from the nearby forests and water from a fine spring. His leather, known as Snyder's Jerk, was used by local shoe and harness makers. He did a thriving business for some fifteen years.
