About Norwell, Massachusetts

Norwell is a town of 11,351 people in Plymouth County, on the North River. Cornet Robert Stetson, probably its first settler, made his home on a plain near the river in 1634, when this land belonged to Scituate. The south end was incorporated as a town of its own on February 14, 1849, under the name South Scituate. Voters changed the name to Norwell on March 5, 1888, honoring Henry Norwell, a dry goods merchant who paid to keep the town roads in repair.

From the 1700s into the early 1800s, shipyards from Fox Hill down to the Block-House turned out frigates, schooners, whalers and merchant ships. Edward Delano, son of William Delano of the Wanton yard, became a naval constructor and built the Hartford, Admiral Farragut's flagship. By 1885 the town had six boot and shoe factories employing more than 160 people, and it made tacks and trunks as well.

“Our broad-axes and mauls were our dumb-bells; our whip-saws and cross-cuts our vaulting bars”
William P. Tilden, 1889
  • A Quaker's shipyardIn 1661 Edward Wanton purchased a farm of eighty acres below Till's Creek. Shipbuilding had started on his land by about 1670.
  • A parish since 1642On February 2, 1642, Scituate church members who would not accept Charles Chauncy as their minister started a second church, the First Parish.
  • A bell from Colonel RevereIn 1810 the First Parish paid Colonel Revere for a bell that weighed 1,018 pounds. Twenty years later the parish had a new meeting-house, and every pew in the 1830 building was sold within three hours.
  • The Stetson-Ford HouseThomas Stetson, whose father was among the area's first English settlers, built the oldest part of this house about 1674. In the 1780s the family of Michael Ford, leading shipbuilders, rebuilt and enlarged it. The town owns it today, and it joined the National Register in 1998.
  • Deacon Bryant's houseDeacon Thomas Bryant built the first section of the Bryant-Cushing House on Main Street about 1698, a First Period house five bays wide around a big central chimney. The Cushing family kept it for roughly two hundred years, and a large share of its land now lies in the Norris Reservation. The house joined the National Register in 1976.
