About North Pembroke, Massachusetts

North Pembroke is a census-designated place of 3,490 people in the town of Pembroke, in Plymouth County. This northern part of Pembroke first belonged to Scituate. When local Quakers put up a meetinghouse here in 1706, they called it the Scituate upper meetinghouse to tell it apart from the older lower one, and only later did it become known as the Pembroke Meetinghouse.

Pembroke also built ships on the North River. The Brick Kiln shipyard worked there from 1730 to 1848, and its two separate yards often had three or four vessels under construction side by side. One of the ships launched from this riverbank ended up at the center of the Boston Tea Party.

  • A Quaker meetinghouse from 1706The Pembroke Friends Meetinghouse stands where Washington Street meets Schoosett Street, and no older Quaker meetinghouse survives in Massachusetts. Robert Barker donated the land and was appointed to build it, though the records don't make clear whether he did the carpentry himself or hired it out. The benches and the railings of its gallery are likely the earliest meetinghouse furnishings still in place anywhere in the region.
  • A whaler at the Tea PartyShipbuilder Ichabod Thomas built the Beaver, a whaling ship, at the Brick Kiln Yard. On December 16, 1773, the Sons of Liberty under Samuel Adams climbed aboard the Beaver and two other tea ships in Boston Harbor, and the night became known as the Boston Tea Party.
  • The ship on the town sealThe Maria, the vessel pictured on Pembroke's town seal, was also built at the Brick Kiln Yard on the North River.
