About Pembroke, Massachusetts
Pembroke is a town of 18,361 people in Plymouth County, about halfway between Boston and Cape Cod. The Wampanoag and the Massachusett called this land Mattakeesett, meaning "place of much fish," because herring packed its rivers every spring. In 1650 Robert Barker and Dolor Davis became the first English settlers, building near Herring Brook. The settlement belonged to Duxbury until March 21, 1712, when it became a town with 54 families. Its settlers wanted to call it Brookfield, but a Worcester County town already had that name, so it was named for Pembroke in Wales.
Water shaped the town's work. The Pembroke Iron Works opened in 1720, using bog iron raked from pond and swamp bottoms, while mills ran on the streams and ice was cut from the ponds. Timber and the North River made shipbuilding the leading trade, and between 1678 and 1871 the river's five yards turned out 1,025 vessels. In 1820 the West Parish broke away as the town of Hanson, leaving Pembroke in its present shape. By 1924 cranberry bogs had spread through town, and 14 of the 17 growers in the directory lived in Bryantville.
“It seems that Pembroke was not always considered out of the world. Indeed it was thought to be the very hub of Plymouth County”
- Defying the Crown earlyPembroke's town meeting protested royal orders against paper money in 1740, and in 1765 it told its representative to fight the Stamp Act as intolerable. Its warning of December 28, 1772, said British fleets and armies sent to enforce such measures would break the union with the colonies, words George Bancroft later described as the first official utterance of revolution. Pembroke's Reverend Gad Hitchcock preached in Boston against the British, and Samuel Adams thanked him with fine new clothes.
- Ninety years at seaAt the North River's Brick-Kilns yard, Capt. Ichabod Thomas built ships, including the Beaver, whose tea went into Boston Harbor in 1773. His Maria, launched in 1782 as a privateer, never served as one. Nantucket's Rotch family sent her trading to the Falklands in 1785 and Greenland's ice in 1788. After 27 whaling voyages from New Bedford, she flew Chile's flag as the Maria Pachaco until her breakup at Vancouver Island in 1872. The town seal shows her.
- The herring came firstPembroke has guarded its herring run since 1741. Oliver Ames, who founded the Easton shovel works, tried to buy the Glover Mill site, but dropped the deal when he learned its sluiceways must stay open five or six weeks for the fish, right when his business was busiest. An 1856 state law kept the Barker's River fishways open April 10 to May 15. Isaac Hatch's East Pembroke mill made boxes instead, up to 2,000 mackerel kits a week.
- A Quaker meetinghouse from 1706Robert Barker built the Friends Meetinghouse for Pembroke's Quakers in 1706, and it ranks among the oldest Quaker meetinghouses in the country. Its room is split down the middle, with men seated on one half and women on the other. Quakers worshipped there until 1876, and today it belongs to the Pembroke Historical Society. The Pembroke Friends Meetinghouse joined the National Register in 2006.
