About Okolona, Mississippi

Okolona is a city of 2,513 people in Chickasaw County. It shares the job of county seat with Houston. Settlers first called the place Rose Hill in 1845, but they learned that another town already had that name. A post office opened here on March 23, 1846, so a new name was needed. Colonel Josiah N. Walton, the postmaster at Aberdeen, chose Okolona. He named it for Oka-laua, a Chickasaw warrior he had met years before, whose name meant peaceful, yellow or blue water.

The Mobile and Ohio Railroad crossed Chickasaw County in 1859, and its tracks through Okolona were done by July 1860. The county's trade then shifted from Houston to Okolona. The town became a place to gin cotton and ship it to market, and new stores went up along Main Street. The Black Prairie around it was part of Mississippi's first Cotton Belt. People came to call it the "Bread Basket of the Confederacy."

  • The Battle of Okolona, 1864In February 1864 Union General William Sooy Smith left Memphis with 6,500 cavalry. He hoped to join General Sherman at Meridian. He crossed the Tallahatchie at New Albany and pushed toward Pontotoc and Houston. Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest met him in a running cavalry fight and beat the Federals just north and west of Okolona. Forrest's brother Jeffery was killed there. It was one of five fights in and around the town.
  • Built in 1850, still standingThe war burned most of the town's stores and shops, and the railroad depot burned too. Because of that, few buildings from before the war survive. The Elliott-Donaldson House, built in 1850, is one of them, along with a handful of other homes. It joined the National Register in 1980.
  • A railroad market townA county history that estimated 2,500 people here in 1906 called Okolona the market town for a large area of farm country. The Mobile and Ohio kept its round house and machine shops in town. Local plants made ice, handles and bottled drinks, pressed cotton and pressed oil from cotton seed. The Okolona Banking Company opened in 1888 and the Merchants and Farmers Bank in 1897. The bank's building joined the National Register in 1987.
  • Okolona College, 1902 to 1965From 1902 to 1965, Okolona College taught African American students as a historically black school. Its old grounds now form the center of the Okolona College Historic District. William Raspberry spent his boyhood in Okolona and finished at the college's high school in 1952. He went on to win the Pulitzer Prize as a journalist.
