About Verona, Mississippi

Verona is a city of 2,792 people in Lee County, a short ride south of Tupelo. The town takes its name from Verona, Italy, and it had a post office by April 16, 1857. The Mobile and Ohio Railroad laid its tracks through the town around July 1860, and Verona received its charter on July 18, 1860.

When the Civil War came, the Confederacy used the railroad town to store supplies and to drill its soldiers. That role ended on December 25, 1864, when Federal cavalry led by Brigadier General Benjamin Grierson rode into Verona and raided it on Christmas Day.
