About Orting, Washington

Orting is a city of 9,041 people in Pierce County, set in a valley between the Puyallup and Carbon rivers. The first recorded land claims here were filed in 1854 by four settlers: Daniel Lane, Daniel Varner, Thomas Headley and William Henry Whitesell. Today city streets carry their names, and a monument in City Park honors them. Early settlers called the place Gunson's Prairie, and later it was known as Carbon.

In 1877 the Northern Pacific Railway built its line toward the coal town of Wilkeson straight across Whitesell's land, so the spot became Whitesell's Crossing. That same year a railway superintendent renamed the townsite Orting, a name said to come from an Indigenous word for prairie. The trains made travel easier and brought settlers quickly, and Orting incorporated as a city on April 22, 1889.

  • Daffodils downtown since 1934The Daffodil Festival Parade has come through downtown Orting since 1934. The town is its fourth and last stop, after Tacoma, Puyallup and Sumner. School bands play, the Daffodil Queen appears, and more than 10,000 people turn out in early April. The parade stopped only during the Second World War, from 1943-1945, and in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Supplying the coal townsLogging drove Orting's early growth, and the town supplied the coal mining camps of Wilkeson and Carbonado. Christmas tree farms and flower bulb farms came later. Leftover pieces of the old rail line now belong to the Meeker Southern Railroad, and another old railroad bed became the paved Foothills Trail, which runs from Orting toward Enumclaw and Sumner.
  • Thirty minutes from RainierOrting stands on several layers of old lahar deposits about 30 miles from Mount Rainier. Studies of past flows and of the mountain itself have rated it the city most at risk from a lahar, which scientists say could reach town in 30 minutes. Sirens around the area are set off by sensors on the mountain, and local schools hold regular evacuation drills.
  • The Washington Soldiers HomeSouthwest of the city on the Orting Kapowsin Highway, the Washington Soldiers Home gives nursing and medical care to veterans and their families. Its cemetery holds 2,265 graves, including those of four Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War.
