About South Hill, Washington
South Hill is a community of 64,708 people in Pierce County, on the high ground just south of Puyallup. It takes its name from its spot on the heights south of the Puyallup River valley, while the nearby Edgewood and Milton areas are known as North Hill. The Longmire-Biles wagon train crossed the hill in 1853, and a military road built in the 1850s brought logging camps, farms and hunting grounds.
The hill was also the main route to Kapowsin and Eatonville, and in 1905 the main road through it was named Ball-Wood Road. Trains on the Tacoma-Puyallup Interurban Line ran through South Hill from 1909. Even so, the population grew slowly until after World War II, when better roads let people commute to Tacoma, Fort Lewis and Seattle. South Hill has stayed unincorporated, and in 1998 voters turned down a plan to make it a city called Southview.
“Just when the first settlers put down roots on South Hill is not known. But old maps show that by the 1870s several Euro-Americans were living on the Hill, grouped mostly along the existing Military Road.”
- Balloon bombs in 1945Near the end of World War II, Japan sent bombs across the Pacific on balloons to strike the American mainland. Two of them came down in South Hill.
- Thun Field since 1944The SagMiller Airstrip opened on the hill in 1930. Thun Field followed in 1944, though John Thun didn't buy it until 1949. Today it is the Pierce County Airport.
- Firgrove School, 1895 to 1950The Firgrove School District was set up in 1895 to teach the hill's children. It joined the Puyallup School District in 1950, and Firgrove Elementary still carries the old name.
- A passion play and a fireFrom 1982 to 2006, Champion Center Church staged the Jesus of Nazareth passion play every year at its amphitheatre on State Route 161. In 2006 Pierce County bought the site from the church for $6.9 million, and an electric fire destroyed the stage in 2007. The land is now Meridian Habitat Park & Community Center.
- The Nathan Chapman Memorial TrailSgt. Nathan Chapman lived in South Hill. When the war in Afghanistan began, he became the first U.S. soldier to lose his life there. A 1.6 mile paved trail named for him winds through forest and wetlands from South Hill Community Park to the Heritage Recreation Center.
